Changes in Atlantic major hurricane frequency since the late-19th century

چکیده

Abstract Atlantic hurricanes are a major hazard to life and property, topic of intense scientific interest. Historical changes in observing practices limit the utility century-scale records hurricane frequency. To evaluate past frequency, we have here developed homogenization method for frequency over 1851–2019. We find that recorded increases associated decrease USA strike fraction, consistent with not likely true climate trend. After homogenization, basin-wide activity since 1970s part increase, but recovery from deep minimum 1960s–1980s. suggest internal (e.g., multidecadal) variability aerosol-induced mid-to-late-20th century reductions probably masked greenhouse-gas warming contributions North

Homogeneous record of Atlantic hurricane surge threat since 1923.

Detection and attribution of past changes in cyclone activity are hampered by biased cyclone records due to changes in observational capabilities. Here we construct an independent record of Atlantic tropical cyclone activity on the basis of storm surge statistics from tide gauges. We demonstrate that the major events in our surge index record can be attributed to landfalling tropical cyclones; ...

Simulated reduction in Atlantic hurricane frequency under twenty-first-century warming conditions

Increasing sea surface temperatures in the tropical Atlantic Ocean and measures of Atlantic hurricane activity have been reported to be strongly correlated since at least 1950 (refs 1–5), raising concerns that future greenhouse-gas-induced warming could lead to pronounced increases in hurricane activity. Models that explicitly simulate hurricanes are needed to study the influence of warming oce...

Development of brewing science in (and since) the late 19th century: molecular profiles of 110-130year old beers.

The 19th century witnessed many advances in scientific enzymology and microbiology that laid the foundations for modern biotechnological industries. In the current study, we analyze the content of original lager beer samples from the 1880s, 1890s and 1900s with emphasis on the carbohydrate content and composition. The historic samples include the oldest samples brewed with pure Saccharomyces ca...
